Hemroids or varicose veins of the anus and rectum are enlarged bulging blood vessels located inside or outside the anus.

Internal hemroids occur inside the rectum below the anus lining. If the hemroids are ruptured which usually happens from bowel movements, bleeding will occur.

External hemroids develop near the anus, they are covered by a thin layer of skin. Bleeding can occur if the hemroids are ruptured. There is no known cause although it is considered that diet is a factor.

There are other conditions such as anal fissures which are often incorrectly associated with hemroids. Bleeding could be as a result of these conditions and treatment should be specific to that condition.

More than half the worlds population will develop hemroids mainly after the age of 30. Pregnant women due to the pressure exerted have a predisposition to develop hemroids.

Hemroids is a common condition and yet many of us do not know the correct spelling of the word. Here are a few variations - hemorroids, hemmoroids, hemroids, hemeroids, hemmroids, hemmeroids, haemorrhoids , hemoroids, hemmoroids, hemrroids, hemorroides, hemorrhoids.

You will know that you have hemroids either from itching in the anal area, a protruding lump, bleeding during a bowel movement or localized pain.

Causes and symptoms - precisely why hemroids develop is unknown. Hemroid researchers have identified a number of reasons to explain hemroidal swelling, including the simple fact that people's upright posture places a lot of pressure on the anal and rectal veins. Aging, obesity, pregnancy, chronic constipation or diarrhea, excessive use of enemas or laxatives, straining during bowel movements, and spending too much time on the toilet are considered contributing factors. Heredity may also play a part in some cases. There is no reason to believe that hemroids are caused by jobs requiring, for instance, heavy lifting or long hours of sitting, although activities of that kind may make existing hemroids worse.
